Suicide on Mackinac Island

Winter Crazies

Warning: Living in an isolated frozen resort can make you lose your shit.

The latest rumor:  Some guy tried to commit suicide the other day in his downtown apartment right on Market Street. Why wouldn’t this guy go up into the island a but, so as not to sully our bustling winter downtown reputation?

I don’t really know if that’s true or not, because everybody on this island talks and talks and talks, but that’s what I heard. Somebody tried to off himself in his apartment…

Supposedly. Take it with a grain of salt. This is a tiny island after all and people have nothing better to do.

I wonder if certain locations, combined with certain weather conditions, don’t just encourage a man to put a gun to his miserable head. The sky is always dark here and sometimes it’s just too cold to leave the house.

If a person was living in a tropical paradise, watching dolphins surf on warm waves– would that person feel as hopeless? Probably not. I’m not saying dolphins cure depression; I’m saying that warm weather and happy happiness tend to make the depressed feel a little better. Oh, and ice-cold beer on a hot beach. Who could be despondent while drinking ice-cold beer on a hot beach?

We on the island live in a frozen wasteland.

The winter weather breaks down your mind. If you are strong, you can overcome. But if you are weak, you are crazy and you are the only caretaker at the Overlook Hotel. Goodbye sanity and…

…here’s Johnny!!
